POMP is a celebrated Afrikaans art and culture journal—intellectual, daring, and unapologetically local. For its 11th issue, Sorted Design International was tasked with full creative direction, guiding the visual language, layout structure, and typographic choices across the publication.
The design approach respected the journal’s academic depth while introducing a bolder, more contemporary voice. We developed a modular layout system that could accommodate long-form essays, poetry, visual art, and critical theory—all without compromising on aesthetic rhythm or readability.
Typographic treatments were expressive yet controlled, echoing the layered nature of the content. Each spread was considered as a curated space: sometimes restrained, sometimes chaotic—mirroring the dynamism of Afrikaans cultural discourse.
“POMP 11 wasn’t about decorating ideas—it was about building a visual architecture sturdy enough to hold them.”
The final publication stands as both a collector’s item and a living artefact of evolving Afrikaanse thinking.
